Is SEO just nice to have?

by | Sep 19, 2025

When you’re a small business owner or founder, your to-do list often has one of its own. No matter how much we do, the list keeps growing. And when you’re in the thick of it, doing things that don’t immediately bring in cold cash are pushed down to the bottom.

This is often what happens with SEO. Because it doesn’t give you an instant return, it slides down the list of priorities and then doesn’t get done. And that means your site is languishing at the bottom of search results, and your dream clients are landing on your competitor’s website and spending their cash with them.

So, if you have a website for your business, optimising it so that it attracts Google’s attention, which then shows it to your dream clients, is definitely not just nice to have. It’s a must-have if you want your website to bring in the right leads and sales effortlessly.

What is SEO?

In a nutshell, search engine optimisation is about attraction. It’s about having key things on your website in the right places so it attracts Google’s attention. There’s no point in having a beautiful site with amazing products or services if no one knows it’s there. And they will only know about it if Google knows about it.

Once you’ve got Google’s attention, you want to make sure it is so impressed with what it sees on your site that it shows you to the people who are searching for what you sell. And for this to increase your leads and sales, you need to be showing up on the 1st page of search results. Because when was the last time you scrolled onto page 2?

SEO is about things like having the right words in the best places across your site, navigation that makes it easy for readers to find what they’re looking for about you and your services, rich, human-focused content that builds trust and showcases what you do and how, and is rated by other sites because they send their audiences to you too.

Having all of those things in place means that once you attract Google’s attention, it will be impressed by your site and show it higher up in results.

Keep it simple

One of the main reasons I hear from small business owners as to why they don’t work on their website, is that they think it’s too difficult to make the changes. If you’re not an expert, making changes to your website can feel scary, particularly if you’ve spent a lot of money getting a designer to create it. I spent of lot of years worrying I’d break mine if i started “messing” with the backend.

The reality is, the changes you need to make to the backend (the mechanics of your site) are small. It’s about changing words in places like your tagline and headings. Adding in links to your content, adding the right heading levels, adding descriptions to your pages and images. All these things are small tweaks rather than complete redesigns.

Most websites are user friendly and the backend is designed to be easy to work on, particularly those that are aimed at people building them themselves rather than by a web designer.

The key is having a plan and working on things little and often. Not only does that feel less overwhelming, but it means things are fresh in your mind. Spending a full day working on your website, and then not looking at it again for two months will probably mean that you’ve forgotten how you did things. And then you’re back to square one, needing to spend a big chunk of time on it to work out how to do things again.

Simple SEO: Ranking & Romance workshop

I created my Ranking & Romance workshop because I want to show you that creating the space in your busy working week is doable and that small chunks of time really can be effective.

The workshop starts by explaining the core pillars of SEO and what they involve, and then looks at how to create a strategy or plan to work on each of those pillars, regularly. How you do this will depend on where you are in your website journey. If you’re still in the design stage, keywords will probably need to be your priority.

Whereas if you’ve had a site for a while, building your authority might be your focus and therefore you want to create a strategy that allows more time for that, and less time for the other pillars.

If it feels like you’ve got a mountain to climb to make the changes you need so your site connects with your dream clients and increases leads and sales effortlessly, this workshop is for you. Here’s what Kelly from Kemend Proofreading Services had to say about it:

“I have always found SEO confusing – until I attended Suzy’s masterclass.

“Before your masterclass it felt like a mountain to climb, but now it feels much more like a hill – and that’s thanks to you. It truly was amazing, thank you!”
