Case study: SEO Audit and Content Package

The Client

Background Sounds is run by co-founders Mel and Grant. They provide high-quality licence-free music to businesses across the UK, offering an affordable alternative to the expensive price of having a PRS PPL licence.

The problem

The majority of new clients find the company as a result of a Google search when they’re looking for a cheaper alternative to buying an expensive music licence. Mel and Grant had invested in a content package from me, which involved optimising and updating some of their most popular blog posts as well as creating new ones based on their users’ search terms.

It became clear that, as well as optimising posts, some other things needed to be updated ontheir website to make sure the site was attracting more of the right people, helping to increase sales of subscriptions which is the main goal.

The solution

The audit started with me doing keyword research based on Background Sound’s business and the terms they wanted to rank highest for, as well as competitor analysis to see how their site compared to others in their field. I then did a full review of the site, analysing what was working well, what wasn’t and the areas that needed to be improved to ensure she started to show up higher in search results pages.

I created a step-by-step action plan, working through each area, explaining what needed to be changed and how to make the changes.

The action plan covered:

  1. Keywords – current and new, and where they should go
  2. Areas working well
  3. Areas that need improvement
  4. Recommendations included page names, image and page descriptions, the need for more copy on certain pages and what that should contain, and ways to improve the site’s authority off-page.

The main area that sets the company apart from its competitors is the fact that they provide a personal service. The action plan focused on highlighting that with suggestions to add more of their personality to the site.

Existing blog posts that brought a lot of new customers to the site were optimised to make sure they contained the keywords and phrases people were using in Google. Google Search Console was used to identify the search terms that led people to the site, and new content was created for those, as well as posts targeting the industries and business types they wanted to work with.

The outcome

Enhancing the parts of the website that were working well, adding more focused keywords to key areas, as well as a plan to continue to optimise and update blog posts and publish new ones on the key areas they wanted to focus on, has increased the number of new people finding their site.

Visits to some blog posts have increased by over 50%, helping to increase the number of enquiries and sales of their subscription service, and the amount of new traffic to their website in general has increased.

The action plan has given them the knowledge to continue to make tweaks and changes to their content so it attracts more potential clients, as well as providing a longer term plan to increase authority and get their busines in front of new audiences.
