Inspiring Businesses: Janine Sykes

by | Jun 3, 2025

This month’s inspiring businesswoman is Janine Sykes, a content strategist who specialises in helping business owners make posting content on LinkedIn simple, strategic and designed for impact. Read on to learn about her first job and how she helps small business owners stand out.

What was your first job? Did you enjoy it?

Well, technically, my very first job was a paper round on a Sunday morning – my poor dad came with me every week in all weathers, and I think I earned about £2! I always wondered why he didn’t just give me the £2 and take the lie in, but it was important to him that we understood the value of money.

My first job with a payslip was working in the local theatre in Northampton. I absolutely loved that job and worked there for around 9 years, moving from front of house to the bar; it was a great team, lots of interesting events and a real mix of people. One night we might have a swearing comedian, and the next it could be an opera, so we literally saw all kinds of people!

What do you do now? Is this what you originally trained to do?

I specialise in LinkedIn as a social media platform for business growth. My speciality is helping service-based business owners who’ve built their businesses on Instagram or Facebook and are struggling to make the switch to LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a different beast from the Meta platforms and needs its own strategy rooted in storytelling and authority.

How do your services help small business owners?

I offer both done-for-you and coaching services, and a lot of my work is based around helping small business owners to position and message themselves on LinkedIn. How they create content that moves the needle, all wrapped up with an outreach and sales strategy that essentially makes them money!

Come and follow me on LinkedIn or Instagram where I share tips and advice to help you create a LinkedIn strategy that works for you.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve been given? How did it help you?

That’s a tough one! Probably that the art of sales is actually using your ears, not your mouth!

If you could give your 20-year-old self one piece of career advice, what would it be?

It was really drummed into me as a kid that you work for others, we were not an entrepreneurially family. We played it safe, so probably at 20 it would be not to waste your time doing things that make you miserable and have the confidence to go and work for yourself. It took me 15 years to take that leap of faith!

Which do you prefer, tea or coffee? Beach or pool? Seaside or countryside?

Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon. I prefer the pool on holiday, but I prefer the seaside to the countryside!

What’s your dream job or client?

My dream job would be working with animals.
