by | Feb 7, 2025

As small business owners, we’re always looking for ways to keep costs down so our profit margins are good and we can keep trading. If you play music in your business, paying for the correct licence can be a costly expense. This month’s interview with inspiring businesswoman Mel Anderson, co-owner of Background Sounds, shares how her service can save businesses hundreds of pounds by using their royalty-free music.

Read on to find out more about Mel, whether she’s a tea or coffee drinker and the best piece of career advice she’s received.

What was your first job? Did you enjoy it?

My first job was waitressing at the age of 13.  It was in a local country hotel, it was hard work but I loved it.

What do you do now?

I now own and operate a background music company called Background Sounds.  We specialise in providing royalty-free background music to shops, restaurants and cafes.

Running this type of business isn’t what I trained to do, however, my degree is in Psychology so there’s plenty of overlap when it comes to understanding the role of music in influencing customer experience and behaviour which comes in handy.

You can find out more about us from our website or follow us on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn.

How do your services help small business owners?

We help business owners by saving them money on the cost of playing music.  We do this by providing an easy way to access music that can be played legally without a PRS PPL music licence.

We know what it’s like running a business in a tough economic climate and are passionate about helping businesses save money whilst still playing quality music that helps them create the perfect first impression and makes clients and employees feel relaxed and inspired.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve been given? How did it help you?

If you want something, go all in.

If you could give your 20-year-old self, one piece of career advice, what would it be?

To be great at your job means switching off and taking time for yourself to recharge, make this a priority.

Which do you prefer, tea or coffee? Beach or pool? Seaside or countryside?

Tea but I always start my day with a coffee.

Countryside.

What’s your dream job or client?

My dream job would be to work as a child psychotherapist, something I hope there’s still time for me to get around to do.
